We will never know how many people were victims of communism between the October Revolution of 1917 and Stalin’s death in March 1953. Some historians say 20 million died others 50 million. Millions more worked as slaves in the Gulag, the system of mines, factories and building sites which lay at the heart of the great Soviet drive for industrialisation. 　　Gulag is tragedy on a harrowing scale. The stories of a nightmare world, told in the words of both victims and perpetrators, continue to haunt today’s society. Slave labour built the Russian Parliament and half of Moscow. The legendary Volga Canal was built by the Gulag and if people died during their work then they would be thrown in with the cement. 　　Gulag is a journey from a canal on the outskirts of Moscow to the deserts of central Asia and the snowy wastes of the Arctic via the heart of Russian society and history. It is not simply a story of repression but an exploration of the way the camp system stands as a metaphor for Soviet Russia for the camps combined repression with a huge economic purpose, lying at the heart of Stalin’s plans to industrialise.

The film tells the story of the last known group of women who survived being held in the Soviet-era forced labor camps called Gulag. The Gulag was a brutal system of repression and terror that devastated the Soviet population during the regime of Joseph Stalin and was first described by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in "The Gulag Archipelago".

Levon remembers his childhood in Turkey: love, political brutality. A bloody comedy. From his Dutch domicile, Levon reminisces about his brother-in-law (a hairdresser who robs dead Turks), a brilliant Kurdish musician, a red-bearded executioner, a seventeen-year-old girl with chestnut-colored skin, and a Turkish Apollo with eight wives who likes to bury himself in hot ash. His memory is also populated by beautiful thoroughbred horses, stray dogs, camel drivers, soldiers, and Turkish policemen. These poetic, almost surrealist scenes of magic love and political cruelty are contrasted with the reality of present day Rotterdam, presented in the guise of a modern crime story with Armenian terrorists and a Kurdish tragedy. 　　"Every year, we look at thousands of films and when one shines above the rest, as ON THE OLD ROMAN ROAD did, it is indeed a pleasure. Fathers and sons, and political exile. In the fall of 1975, Franco is dying but repression continues. Jules and Eve, living well in exile in France, continue to assist the resistance. The underground calls with a job for either, and Eve goes, to the disappointment of their son, Laurent, visiting his parents at their seaside place in Cherbourg and not getting on well with his father. When a road accident in Spain brings tragedy, the father and son's conflict worsens. After Laurent and his girlfriend, Julie, pay a harrowing visit to Jules, Julie stays, taking Jules as a lover. Revelations and admissions about Jules and Eve make way for new ground for Jules and Laurent.

Unlike the standard American westerns at this time that portray Native Americans with Caucasian actors, this Argentine film by director Lucas Demare actually has Atahualpa Yupanqui as Galvan, one of the Native Americans who rebel against their working conditions. As in many Latin films, songs and dances entertain in the interludes between action scenes. The setting is a sugar-cane plantation that exploits its workers beyond their capacity to endure, resulting in a rebellion.
